A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
