🔗 Share this article From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein Document Disclosure is Mixed. Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner. Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure. Concerns Raised by Redactions While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness. “People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added. Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration. The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured. But a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the attack. “It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer. “New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.” Former President Campaign Issues Statement Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement. “This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added. Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication. The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
