Igor Jesus Scores Twice as Nottingham Forest Round Off Europa League Campaign with Victory over Hungarian Opponents

Forest striker in action
Igor Jesus has now scored eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this campaign.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • The midfielder rounds off a excellent display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as the Premier League side rounded off the group stage of the Europa League with a comfortable triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had already secured a place in the knockout round play-offs and went into this fixture with a slim possibility of making the league's elite, even though they required several results to go their way.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident performance will give Forest fans confidence that their team can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – coached by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – Jesus firing an effort in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the defence and then place a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

The third strike killed off Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead Forest scored again when the impressive James McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a foul by the hapless Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It's more than the result, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good step."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in European competition this season with six of his 11 goals scored in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got a trio of strikes in his last two games and the threat of competition for his place in attack could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was outstanding against the opposition, producing two superb finishes and generally being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with McAtee producing his best performance in a Forest jersey since joining from the champions last summer, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just about displaying your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are positive indicators."
