The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
