Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
